Amsterdam Day 2

Tuesday, May 4, 2015

Today we are going to visit the Keukenhof Garden, one of the most stunning gardens that I have ever seen.  I use to think nothing could beat the Butchart Garden in Victoria but, at least as far as flowers from bulbs go, the Keukenhof Garden beats them all.

In talking with one of the groundskeepers he indicated that there was 7 Million bulbs and they dig them up and plant new ones every year.  I was surprised that they do not split the old corms but they plant entirely new bulbs every year.  He indicated that they dig them up in August and start planting new bulbs in October.  He said while we are enjoying Christmas he will still be planting bulbs.  The garden is only open for 8 weeks each year and this spring the weather has been cooler than normal so the bulbs were a little late but perfect timing for our visit.

When we get home from our vacations I usually make a separate DVD of our trips and this year I will add a separate video file on the DVD showing nothing but the garden flowers as I took so many pictures it would take to long to include them in the DVD of our trip.  However, for me, it is another item ticked off my bucket list.

On a sad note, I am afraid I have lost all creditability with Shirl and Kat regarding my navigational skills, GPS certification and we now have the saying "It is only another two blocks" while in fact it should be "It is just another two miles"....  This occurred while trying to find a restaurant with the GPS instead of just asking someone...but you know, "some" males just don't believe in lowering themselves to ask directions.....  We were going to a local restaurant that the GPS said was just a couple of blocks away when in fact it was probably 1 1/2 miles away which resulted in three tired (and two of them cranky) people.  When we finally arrived at the restaurant it was closed!!!

 The pictures speak for themselves.....

This couple walked right in front of the "Stay off the grass" sign to take their picture.  I guess the sign should have been written in Japanese, but you would think the hand sign would have given them some clue.

There was a separate building with nothing but orchids, at least 50-70 different types and colors.

Tomorrow we will spend time lounging around the apartment and going to a special concert that will be held about two blocks from our apartment where the King and Queen of The Netherlands will be attending, (I think if I understood the translation correctly).
