Amsterdam Day 5

Today we said farewell to our daughter Kathleen, the one who kept us going in the right direction, well most of the time.   I can remember one evening when we were trying to find a restaurant that had been recommended to us and she kept us going in a large 5 block circle and then we discovered the restaurant was closed...  Now that she has left us I can pass all sorts of blame onto her shoulders :-)

Waiting for the taxi.  Kat took home one of our suitcases with formal clothes we wore on the ship as well as some port, a beautiful wind chime and some cheap booze.

Technology is also changing life here. In a previous post I mentioned the buildings with the beam hanging out over the front of the home which was used to hoist furniture up to the upper floors where the item would be brought into the room through open windows.  Now a truck with a lift that reduces the effort

We did see a few electric cars here but the bicycle still reins..

A small park with tribute to Rembrandt

We went to the Verzets Museum which is about the Dutch underground movement during the war.  It was an excellent and informative display of how Hitler took over Holland and the life of the resistance movement during his occupancy of the land.  It was very informative as well as depressing to see how smoothly he took control over the people initially, not by force but persuasion.  The country was in such an economic decline that he offered a vision of recovery, meanwhile he had a counter plan to rule all of Europe.  I must say this museum was excellent and worth seeing.

This will be hard to see but if you increase the size of the picture you will see it is a map of Amsterdam and all the little dots represents the location of 10 Jewish people.

This morning BBC news had a story about the Lost Children of the Holocaust, and organizations that are still searching for family members of that horrible period in life.

How true!

After dodging another lighting storm we had a delightful dinner at a local pub where I sampled the local brews and consumed schnitzel while Shirl had some nice shrimp.

Good Night all,

Roger and Shirl
