Lauterbrunnen Day 1

Today, Monday, May 18, we arrived in Lauterbrunnen from Lucerne around noon to beautiful blue skies.  The train trip lasted about 2 1/2 hours with a transfer at Interlocken.  The train up to Lauterbrunnen is a cog rail which winds up the hills towards town.  Upon reaching Lauterbrunnen we immediately dropped our bags in our room and headed out on the bus to the town of Stechelberg where we caught the first of five lifts up to The Schilthorn, the James Bond 007 area.

Words can not explain the beauty we encountered upon reaching the top.  We were so fortunate to have a day with beautiful blue skies and the views are unbelievable.

The countryside views between Lucern and Lauterbrennen is stunning.

Our really first view of what lies ahead for us.

Views of the town of Murren as we go up the gondola.  I apologize for the quality of the pictures but shooting them through the scratched gondola windows makes it hard to get good quality.  Murren is located on a cliff just above Lautefrbrunnen and the only way to get there is via cable cars.

Arriving at the top of the Schilthorn.

The happy travelers at the top.  The views were just simply beyond beliefe, stunning and we were so lucky to have this beautiful clear day.  I especially noticed the effects of climbing stairs at the high altitude of 9,748 feet, but it was worth it.

Friends, it does not get any better than this.  Unfortunately the pictures do not do justice to the actual scene.  This is typical of the 360 degree view.  The peak on the left is The Eiger, 13,026 Ft., middle is Munch, 13,449 Ft. and the right is The Jungfrau, 13,642 Ft.  All beautiful.

Shirl took this picture for my sister-in-law Rosie, a big Bond fan.  They do have a good Bond museum here in which they described how they made so many of the chase scenes, some of them were actually quite close to being fatal for the actors being subbed into the scenes.  Apparently during the helicopter scene the stunt man actually slipped and was caught by a hook, otherwise it would have been fatal.  They also described the toboggan scene in which they had to re-do the scenes many, many times resulting in having to have the sleds re-welded several times.  They had a helicopter in the air and as soon as they shot the scene they were airlifting it back up to the top for another shot.

We have seen numerous paragliders during our visit.
We met a young couple who had just done their first tandem jump.  They said the flight was wonderful after the in first 3 seconds when they got over the feeling they were going to die.  The flight lasted about 30 minutes.

The weather forecast for the next few days is rain.  Hopefully the forecasters will be as accurate as they are in Seattle.  We are planning on going to Murren tomorrow.

Good Night friends,
